In early March 2023, I had a debate with Keith Teare, hosted by the organization Open to Debate, on the question of whether ChatGPT would do more harm than good. I think about that question a lot, nearly every day. Right now, the negative argument against generative AI—the ledger of bad things—is quite serious. We have nonconsensual deep fake porn, a rise in phishing scams, wholesale disinformation, cognitive surrender, threats to democracy from the subtle influence of governments on LLMs, not to mention the use of generative AI as a surveillance tool. And the effects of all that IP theft on artists and writers, and potential negative effects more broadly across the employment market (though, mercifully, these have been more modest than some people expected). And then there is the deluge of hacks that some have called “Black October”. Paul Kedrosky just dubbed it The Hackening. Marc Benioff, Salesforce’s CEO, called it a “Code red”, amplifying a dark tweet from Anthropic’s Jason Clinton. I think both are right. (Though, to be sure, Clinton thinks this awful period might last only a year or two.)Marc Benioff@BenioffJason is 100% right. Code red. 🚨Jason D.

Meghan broke contact with father in letter citing abuse claims - BBC
The Duchess of Sussex broke contact with her father last year, telling him she and the authorities knew he had abused young girls, the BBC understands. Sources close to the duchess said Meghan warned Thomas Markle in a letter that he would never meet his grandchildren. It is understood the letter was sent to Markle, 82, while he was in hospital in the Philippines after having his leg amputated. It has been reported that images of child sexual abuse allegedly belonging to Markle had been found in his former home in the Philippines and UK police in 2019 told Meghan about claims of abuse against him. Markle, who is based in the US, denies all such allegations. Meghan has been estranged from her father since 2018. He pulled out of his daughter's royal wedding that year, citing ill health. The letter sent by in 2025 appears to be the end of what has been a troubled relationship between father and daughter. It is understood details of the letter, first reported in the Sun on Sunday, include Meghan telling Markle that he would never meet his grandchildren, Archie and Lillibet, with Meghan making it clear she would never contact her father again.
